Activities: Rookie Program
Are you a Rookie Quilter or Coach? The League of Northern Colorado Quilters (LNCQ) wants to supply you with the answer. Younger children and older adults alike are invited to begin exploring the creative art of quilting with free coaching available to the first timers needing and wanting to try piecing a block. If you are a quilter just needing some motivation or moving into new techniques, please contact coordinator and LNCQ Board Member, Eileen Maelzer 663-1418 to inquire. Eileen explained, “We have experienced quilt makers who are willing to mentor or coach “Rookies” – those who need some confidence-building attention.” We hope to help connect those willing to share and those willing to learn even if it is just with falling in love with quilt making. Recent Rookie Quilter or Coach EventSeventeen guests came together in June in Loveland to kick off the LNCQ Rookie/Coach "pairing up". All went home with a new friend, a pre-cut wall quilt kit, and even some sewing supplies provided by generous LNCQ members. After a pizza party, they heard Becky Elzey of Loveland tell about her experience learning to sew 1/4th inch seams from Coach Eileen Maelzer, see the picture at the left. The Rookie who is a young married woman and did not even have a sewing machine, gained the support and enthusiasm from her husband and relatives who provided a new sewing machine. She completed the wall hanging this winter and was able to show it proudly to the gathering. Some of the Rookies came with experience but want to learn new techniques, while others came with their LNCQ coach already picked out and ready to start being coached. If desired, Eileen is willing to be the link for connecting the pairs who are needing to share. One child who is eight, is currently being connected with a coach. Eileen is very grateful to Sew Ready Creations, a local pre-cut quilt company for their generosity helping LNCQ help people fall in love with quilting. |
